Rail passengers face average fare rises of 8% in the new year. The increase in fares is worked out by adding 3% to the headline retail prices index rate of inflation for July. That's remained unchanged at 5%. But the 8% rise can be taken by train companies as an average which means passengers could face even higher increases in their commuting costs.
